The lookbook

8 ranges, in the places they were made for.

The reference

A base, then four blanks.

Calma prints a base reference plus a finish mask — Ref. 102._ _ _ _. The mask is printed blank in the books; the palette below is the house legend, read off the finish lines the catalogues print beside each range.

Ref. 102._ _ _ _

130 of the 241 rows carry at least one finish read off a printed line, between them naming 36 distinct mask codes. The house legend carries 28.

The digit is local to the range.

  • 01transparente under cube but clear/transparent under cubic
  • 04capuccino under pot, una but stainless steel under coqueta
  • 13black under alat alu, alat modular, aruga, contract, cube, menú, nua, om, plis plas, ten, umbrella, una and on unplaced rows but black steel under coqueta
  • 20green 6003 under lou but white under om
  • 21white under cube, flo, gat, plis plas, pot, una but white natural under llum, xanca, xica
  • 27red under gat, pot but rojo under plis plas
  • 62khaki under una but stucco under trama

9 codes in the corpus carry more than one colour name. 7 of them are listed above, where the two names belong to different ranges — those are the ones that will bite a specifier. The other 2 (34 and 35) carry two names inside a single range, which is the same colour written long and short, and are excluded from the finding rather than counted toward it.

Materials and care

29 materials, 4 routines.

150 of the 241 rows print what they are made of. The 2018 edition writes a maintenance routine for 4 of those materials and for no others, so 4 appear below. Where a piece is made of something else, its page says a care guide is issued with delivery rather than inventing one.

Aluminium

Aluminium frames

Aluminium answers the outdoors on three counts — resistance, lightness and its stainless behaviour. The surface is finished with pigments and a textured powder coating, which protects it against UV fading. Cleaning is the only maintenance aluminium asks for, alongside protection from extreme swings in temperature.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel

Iron is the main alloy component, with carbon, nickel and chromium, giving high resistance to ambient corrosion. Stainless can still be marked by some acids — salt residue among them — so periodic cleaning is what keeps it right.

Rotomoulded polyethylene

Rotomoulded polyethylene

Rotational moulding transforms the plastic with a mould, heat and movement: high-density polyethylene particles melt in an oven and spread into the shape the mould was designed to, generally textured and Teflon-lined to give the finished piece its coarse surface.

Cleaning

Water and neutral soap. Never industrial products — glass cleaner among them.

Larix pine tops

Larix pine tops

The top is built from three opposed counter-layers of larix pine, glued with a water-resistant polyurethane. The surface takes two treatments — first a sealant base protector, then a single-component aliphatic resin — combining for high resistance to abrasion.

Cleaning

Water and neutral soap.

In detail

The depth, one disclosure away.

Every field, row by row — 241 rows against six published fields, and what a blank means for each
What the 241 rows carry, field by field. Every figure is a count of rows, and a blank is a document that never printed the value — not a value we lost.
FieldRowsWhere it comes from, and what its absence means
Any dimension230173 carry a full width, depth and height; 47 are round and carry a diameter instead.
Seat height0Calma prints no seat height and no arm height anywhere in the corpus — 0 rows for arms as well. Both fields exist on the row and are empty on every one, which is a fact about the books rather than a gap in the reading.
Packed volume218181 also carry carton dimensions. The price lists ship freight data the catalogues do not, which is why this beats the photographed count.
Nett weight44The thinnest field in the corpus. Only the later price lists carry a weight column at all.
Technical drawing49Rows the technical catalogues draw. The drawing itself is not published here; the row records that one exists.
Room photograph20588 rows have a frame of their own piece; 117 fall back to one of the 133 frames filed under their range, labelled as the range’s rather than the piece’s. 36 have neither.
How the index was built — 10 document years, reconciled by majority vote where they disagree
  • 241indexed rows58 current · 183 historic
  • 52collections4 rows no edition files
  • 146pieces photographed95 have no studio cut-out
  • 131distinct typologies43 rows are a size or finish variant

The three tallies below are why a Calma row can be trusted at all: the archive’s editions contradict each other — the same piece filed under different ranges in different years, named in Spanish in one book and English in the next — and every field here was decided by reading them against one another, never by a single book taken on faith.

Which range a piece belongs to

  • 173catalogue vote the editions were read against each other and the range the majority of them file the piece under wins
  • 55folder tree no edition files it, so the distributor archive’s own folder does
  • 9variant head inherited from the piece it is a size or finish variant of

4 rows are placed by nothing at all and carry no range.

Which name it carries

  • 210english vocab the English name, where an edition prints one
  • 25no foreign marker the printed name carries no Spanish or Catalan marker, so it is already English and is kept verbatim
  • 6printed first the name the earliest edition prints, kept where later ones disagree

No name on this site is a translation we made; every one is printed in a book.

Where its dimensions come from

  • 198pricelist the price lists, which dimension every article they carry
  • 43technical the technical catalogues, read where no price list carries the article

11 rows carry no dimension in any document we hold, and 5 carry two that disagree.

A bar is how many of the 241 rows the books of that year print, not how many pieces launched that year — a piece carried by six books stands in six bars. 2014 is the fullest at 121.

Two gaps, printed rather than papered over. 9 codes appear on pieces but in no legend 28, 32, 34, 35, 52, 64, 71, 72, 73 — so their colour is known only from the range that prints them, and none has been guessed at from a neighbouring range. Going the other way, 1 legend code is carried by no indexed piece at all (14): the house publishes the finish, and nothing we hold is specified in it.

The full collection roster — 52 collections, 241 rows, largest first
Rows counts indexed pieces, current those a 2020 or 2021 document still carries. Cut-outs are studio photographs of the piece on white; frames are room photographs of the range. They are counted apart because they are different registers and a range can have many of one and none of the other.

5 ranges — cubic, umbrella, malla, soft, sra. maria — carry no designer credit in any edition we hold, and none has been inferred from a neighbouring range. A further 4 rows sit outside this table entirely: no edition and no archive folder files them under a range, so they carry none rather than a guessed one.

63 rows carry no credit, because no edition prints one for them. None has been attributed from a neighbouring range or from anything outside the books. And 1 range una (Calma studio and SerraydelaRocha) is credited two ways in different editions. Both credits stand: the books disagree, and choosing between them would be inventing an answer they do not give.

A row counts pieces, and a piece specified in three materials stands in three rows. 63 pieces carry a performance textile, named by its mill rather than its fibre — Sunbrella, Silvertex, Agora, Sling, Stamskin, Batyline, Phifer, Docril — because that is how the books specify them and how an order has to be written.

This is a third gate, and it is the strictest one on the site. Our own Australian references publish a venue’s name the day its management confirms it, and the supplier projects on that page are named because the maker publishes them as their own work. Every one of these 19venues is named in the distributor’s own files; nobody has published one, so nobody is named here.
