Salt, spray and seaside exposure

Salt does not attack the timber. It attacks everything holding it together.

Near the sea, outdoor furniture does not wear out evenly. It fails in a predictable order, and it starts at the cheapest components on the piece — the screws, the bolts, the glides, the edge of a coating where it was thinnest. Get those right at order time and a coastal setting stays serviceable for a very long while. Get them wrong and no amount of frame quality saves it.

First question

“Coastal” is four different conditions

A house behind the dune on a surf beach and a house on a sheltered bay four kilometres inland are not the same specification, and buying for the wrong one is how people conclude that outdoor furniture simply does not last near the sea. Find yourself on this ladder before you look at a single range.

  1. Breaking surf

    Within a few hundred metres of surf, or anywhere salt spray visibly reaches.

    The hardest condition there is. Airborne salt is deposited constantly and never fully washes off. Plated and mild steel fail here in a single season; specify teak, marine-grade coated aluminium, or stainless, and expect to rinse.

  2. Beachfront and foreshore

    Facing open water, first few rows back, including foreshore reserves and promenades.

    Salt arrives on every onshore wind but not as spray. Coatings hold if the substrate underneath them was protected first; fixings are the weak point and are usually the cheapest thing on the piece.

  3. Bay, harbour and estuary

    Sheltered water — bayside suburbs, harbours, river mouths, marinas.

    Real but moderate salt loading, often with less wind. Quality powder-coated aluminium and teak both perform well; stainless fixings are still worth specifying and cost little at order time.

  4. Coastal-adjacent

    A few kilometres inland, or shielded by a ridge, buildings or vegetation.

    Ordinary outdoor exposure with occasional salt on strong onshore weather. Most quality outdoor ranges are appropriate; the choice can be made on appearance and comfort rather than on corrosion.

The order of failure

What goes first, and it is never the part you budgeted for

Nearly every coastal specification over-invests in the frame and under-invests in the four items below it. This is the sequence, and it is worth reading as a shopping order rather than as a warning.

First

Fixings — screws, bolts, hinges, glides

The smallest and cheapest parts of a piece are the ones salt reaches first and destroys fastest. A plated screw in a teak arm will bleed rust down the timber long before anything structural is wrong, and once a fixing seizes the piece can no longer be taken apart to be repaired. This is the single most common way good outdoor furniture is lost near the sea, and it is the cheapest thing to get right at order time.

Second

Coatings, at their weak points

Powder coat does not fail across a surface; it fails at an edge, a chip, a drilled hole or a weld where the coating is thinnest or was breached. What matters is what is underneath: on a galvanised frame a chip exposes zinc, which protects the steel around it, and on a bare steel frame the same chip starts rust that then spreads beneath the intact coating.

Fabrics and soft goods

Salt is abrasive and hygroscopic — it holds moisture against fibre — and it works with UV rather than against it. Cushions and slings near the sea fade, stiffen and go flat sooner than the same pieces inland. Treat them as consumables on a re-cover cycle and the whole piece stays serviceable.

The frame itself

Properly specified frames are usually the last thing to go, which is why a coastal specification that concentrates on the frame and economises on the four items above tends to fail early anyway. Teak does not corrode at all; marine-grade coated aluminium does not rust, because there is no iron in it to rust.

Every material here has a caveat, and the caveat is the useful half. A material recommended without one is being sold rather than specified.

The reference material for salt

Teak’s own oil content and tight grain let it sit in salt air untreated and unprotected, which is why it has been the standard timber for boat decks and seaside furniture for well over a century. It does not corrode because there is nothing in it to corrode. Left alone it silvers to a soft grey — a surface change, not decay — and it can be cleaned and re-oiled back at any point in its life, which is the property that makes a tired coastal terrace a maintenance job rather than a replacement.

The caveat: The metal in a teak piece still matters. Specify stainless fixings; plated screws will rust and stain the timber around them regardless of the timber’s quality.

Marine-grade powder-coated metal

Strong, when the coating system is right

A powder coat is a system, not a colour: what protects the metal is the pre-treatment and the substrate beneath the finish. Coating over hot-dip galvanised steel gives two independent defences — a barrier, and zinc that keeps protecting the steel at any point where the barrier is breached. Powder-coat quality norms exist precisely because this varies so much between makers, and “marine” is one of them.

The caveat: A supplier stating compliance with a norm is a statement, not a certificate for your particular batch. Where a project turns on it, ask and it will be put to the factory.

Aluminium

Cannot rust, can still corrode

Aluminium contains no iron, so it cannot produce rust, and marine-grade alloys with a good coating are a mainstay of coastal furniture. What it can do is pit and bloom white where salt sits on a bare or breached surface, and it corrodes noticeably faster where it is in direct contact with a dissimilar metal in a wet, salty environment — which is a fixings question again.

The caveat: Thin, uncoated or cheaply coated aluminium is not a coastal material simply because it is aluminium. The coating system is doing the work.

Grade decides everything

Stainless is not one material. The austenitic grade commonly called marine grade (316) contains molybdenum and holds up in salt far better than the ordinary 304 used in most general hardware; both are vastly better than plated mild steel. In salt air, 304 will often develop surface tea-staining — cosmetic rather than structural, and removable — where 316 will not.

The caveat: No stainless grade is recorded on disk for any range on this site, so nothing here claims one. Where the grade decides your project, ask the trade desk to confirm it for the specific collection before you order.

All-weather woven fibre

Good in salt, judged on the frame

Quality woven outdoor fibre is a synthetic — it does not absorb salt or water and it does not rot. Its coastal performance is really a question about what is underneath it and what holds it on, because the fibre will outlast a poor frame.

The caveat: Woven quality varies enormously. Fibre that is not genuinely UV-stabilised becomes brittle and splits, and no amount of rinsing prevents that.

A consumable, and it should be planned as one

Solution-dyed acrylics carry colour through the fibre rather than on it, which is why they hold up under coastal UV where printed fabrics do not. Even so, fabric is the part of an outdoor setting with the shortest honest life near the sea, and the buyers who are happiest with their furniture ten years on are the ones who budgeted to re-cover rather than expecting not to.

The caveat: Re-covering existing cushions is usually far cheaper than replacing the furniture, and it is work this house does.

Salt decides what a coastal piece is made of. Wind decides what can be left standing, what has to be closed, and what has to be anchored — and on an exposed site it is the load that actually breaks things. Umbrellas and shade structures carry ratings, vents and base requirements that belong with the structures themselves rather than repeated here in summary.

Care, in order of value

The first item here is worth more than the other three together

Rinse with fresh water, and do it more often than feels necessary

This is the highest-value thing anybody can do for outdoor furniture near the sea, and it costs nothing. Salt only does damage while it is sitting on a surface; a hose down every few weeks — and after any strong onshore blow — removes it before it works. Include the undersides, the fixings and the feet, which is where salt collects and where nobody looks.

Deal with a chip in a coating when it is still a chip

A breached coating on a metal frame is the start of a spreading problem rather than a cosmetic one. Touching it up early is a minor job; leaving it until rust lifts the surrounding coating is not.

Decide about teak, then be consistent

Oiling teak keeps it honey-coloured; leaving it silvers it to grey. Both are legitimate and neither harms the timber. What causes trouble is oiling occasionally and inconsistently, which weathers unevenly. Either way, clean it before you decide.

Store or cover the soft goods, not the furniture

Cushions brought in or covered between uses last dramatically longer near the sea, while covering frames tightly can trap moisture against them. The frames are the part that can take it.

What is the best outdoor furniture for a beach house?

Teak with stainless fixings is the default answer for a beach house, because it needs no coating to survive salt and can be restored rather than replaced when it looks tired. Powder-coated marine-grade aluminium is the better choice where pieces must be light enough to move often, and quality all-weather woven where the brief wants lounge comfort. Whichever frame you choose, specify stainless fixings and plan to re-cover cushions on a cycle — those two decisions matter more to how the furniture looks in year seven than the frame does.

Does salt air really damage outdoor furniture?

Yes, but not evenly, and that is the useful part. Salt attacks metal — fixings first, then coatings at their weak points — and it accelerates the ageing of fabrics. It does essentially nothing to teak, and it cannot rust aluminium. So the damage concentrates in the cheapest components of a piece, which means a modest amount of care at specification buys a disproportionate amount of life.

What is marine-grade powder coating?

It refers to a coating specified and applied to a quality norm intended for coastal and marine exposure, rather than to a particular colour or thickness. The important part is the whole system: the pre-treatment, what the coating is applied over, and whether the metal underneath is protected in its own right. Powder coat applied over hot-dip galvanised steel is the strongest common version, because a chip then exposes zinc that goes on protecting the steel instead of bare metal that does not.

Is 316 stainless steel necessary near the ocean?

For genuine beachfront exposure it is the grade to ask for. 316 contains molybdenum and resists chloride attack far better than the 304 used in most general hardware; 304 near surf typically develops brown tea-staining, which is cosmetic and removable but looks like failure. Both are far better than plated mild steel, which should not be specified near the sea at all. Ask the trade desk to confirm the grade for a specific range rather than assuming it.

Does teak need to be oiled if it lives by the sea?

No. Teak does not need oil to survive salt air — its own oils and grain do that — and untreated teak silvers to grey without any loss of integrity. Oiling is a decision about colour, not protection. What does matter near the sea is rinsing salt off, and dealing with any rust bleeding from a fixing before it stains the timber.

Why is my outdoor furniture rusting even though it is “rustproof”?

Almost always the fixings, or a breach in a coating. Manufacturers describe frames as rustproof when the frame material is aluminium or stainless, but the screws, bolts, hinges and glides holding it together are often a lower specification, and those are what rust. The other common cause is a chip at an edge or a drilled hole where a coating was thinnest — rust starts there and then travels under the surrounding finish.

How often should coastal outdoor furniture be rinsed?

Every few weeks in ordinary conditions, and after any strong onshore weather. Salt does damage only while it sits on a surface, so frequency matters more than thoroughness. Rinse the undersides, feet and fixings as well as the visible surfaces — those are where salt collects and where corrosion begins unnoticed.

What outdoor furniture suits a beachfront apartment balcony?

Full exposure with no shelter, a tight footprint, and usually a weight limit and a body-corporate rule about what may be fixed down. That combination points to lightweight marine-grade aluminium or slim teak, stainless fixings, and shade that can be secured without drilling — plus the discipline of bringing cushions in, which is easy on a balcony and doubles their life.

Can existing coastal furniture be restored instead of replaced?

Usually, and it is normally the cheaper answer. Teak cleans and re-oils back from grey; coatings can be touched up or a frame re-coated; and cushions can be re-covered in the customer’s own fabric or from the ranges. Restoration is worth pricing before replacement whenever the frames are structurally sound, which near the sea they often still are.
