What Barlow Tyrie calls itself, in its own book’s own words.

Barlow Tyrie’s catalogue opens with its own claim: “Founded in 1920, BARLOW TYRIE is the world’s oldest manufacturer of teak leisure furniture.” The company is English, based in Braintree, Essex.

Alongside teak, the range includes aluminium and woven leisure furniture, and parasols and pavilions made from FSC-certified eucalyptus and anodised aluminium.

Sail: Anodised-aluminium-pole parasols.
Sail Sunshade: Large rectangular freestanding sunshades.
Pavilions: Stamped-aluminium-frame structures, fixed-roof and Cabrio opening-roof, roofed in awning-weight Sunbrella fabric.
Monterey: Teak-and-cord deep seating, with teak-and-ceramic dining and coffee tables.
Horizon: Sling armchairs, folding carver and side chairs, a circular dining table and a sun lounger with a matching sunshade.

Canopy

One cloth runs the whole parasol range: Sunbrella® .302 Canvas. The house’s own materials copy describes Sunbrella as 100% solution-dyed acrylic yarn, finished with a Teflon® coating.

Ballast

The Napoli Cantilever’s freestanding base takes twelve concrete slabs, 45 × 45 × 3cm, marked “not supplied”. The catalogue gives the total: “12 slabs x 14kg = 168kg + 42kg = Total 210kg.”

Care

Barlow Tyrie prints a real paragraph on this, worth quoting rather than paraphrasing: “Although Sunbrella® fabric will not mildew or mould, we recommend that the canopy is cleaned regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt on the fabric. A stain repellent has been applied to the .302 canvas-colour fabric to make the cleaning process easier.”
