Umbrellas & shade
The mechanism, and the span it covers.
The obvious question is centre-mast or cantilever — two mechanisms. The manufacturers publish more: 6 distinct shading mechanisms across 325 pieces in 28 collections, from a centre pole to a sail curtain to a wall-mounted arm, plus 62bases and a cover that shade nothing. Every span below is the manufacturer’s own published figure; 5 needed a unit conversion from the source text, marked with an asterisk.
Grouped by mechanism
One table per mechanism, in the order shade.ts documents it. A fold prints every size its members carry — Varaschin’s Copacabana ships two umbrellas under one entry, and its span row shows both.

* converted from the manufacturer’s own metres or labelled-feet text — Varaschin prints two shade pieces in bare metres (“3x3 mt”), Kingsley Bate’s market umbrellas in labelled feet (“9' (diameter)”) — rather than centimetres in the source. The piece’s own product page carries the figure as published.
Accessories
Bases and a cover — listed, not spanned, because none of these 62 pieces shades anything. 36publish no size at all; one, Calma’s galvanised-steel base, prints its own floor print anyway (a base’s own footprint, not a canopy) — shown below rather than dropped. Kept separate from the mechanism tables rather than merged into the umbrellas they belong to.

Choosing the mechanism
Four words do most of the work, and each is the manufacturer’s own term for how the canopy is held up and put away.
- Centre-pole
- A single mast rises through the middle of the canopy. Caravita builds four of its core umbrellas this way — Samara, Supremo, Centro and Grande are each printed with a “centre-post” mast in the maker’s own spec, opened by a crank or a sliding, self-locking handle, and closed by a telescopic pole.
- Cantilever
- The pole moves off to one side, leaving the shaded floor clear of any post. Caravita’s own copy calls Amalfi an “elegant cantilever parasol” and Scala “this elegant cantilever parasol”; Barlow Tyrie’s Napoli Cantilever tilts and rotates a full 360° on the same offset-arm principle; FIM prints a whole side-post family on the idea — Rodi, Garda, Ischia and Capri, catalogued as “RETRATTILI” and “PENSILI” ranges that each turn the same 360° on their own base. Amalfi also offers a pole built to order for wall installation — see Custom, below — but the book still classes the parasol itself as a cantilever, not a wall-mounted arm.
- Sail
- No pole in the usual sense — a membrane tensioned between corner or edge posts. Caravita prints two of these, Summerday and All Season, and its own product data marks the “mast type” field for both as not applicable to a single centred mast; All Season’s own corner fixing is a three-way turnbuckle on 6mm-thick stainless steel cable rather than a pole at all.
- Wall-mounted
- A pole set off-centre and built to sit close to a wall rather than stand free. FIM prints one model this way in plain terms — “Wall”, an off-centre pole the book itself describes as designed for convenient near-wall mounting.
Wind
A rated number is a promise. Most of this corpus does not make one.
Barlow Tyrie’s and FIM’s books carry no wind figures anywhere. Caravita prints one, on a single model: Big Ben was tested by structural engineers in a wind tunnel, and the book states plainly that its 3 × 3 m version withstands winds up to 100 km/h — “Wind-stable up to 100 km/h!” in Caravita’s own words. No other Caravita, Barlow or FIM model in the tables above carries a comparable figure.
Symo prints a different kind of number, and prints it often: not a tested story about one flagship, but a Beaufort-scale rating stamped on seventeen of its umbrellas as a standard spec field, each tied to the specific base sold under it. Geisha, for one, is rated 4 Bft (28 km/h) on its own Geisha base and 6 Bft (49 km/h) on the heavier Rondo base — the umbrella does not change, the rating the base earns it does. Inventing a figure for a model that prints none would be a lie; so would flattening this corpus to “one maker rates, the rest are silent”, which is not what the seven books actually show.
Canopy fabrics
Four books, four different ways of printing a colour range.
FIM prints the largest single programme in the corpus — “COLORI”, one shared range across the whole umbrella line, naming 61 colour codes across five fabric families: a plain Acrylic Ecrù, a 42-shade Solution-dyed Acrylic run, a 7-colour Micro-Mesh for windy sites, a 6-colour waterproof Airfim, and a 5-colour Olefim. Caravita instead names six separate fabric ranges — Acrylic, LUMERA Acrylic, Tentmesh, Ferrari Precontraint 302, ProNature Acrylic and TempotestStar FR — each with its own weight and technical rating printed alongside it. Symo names eight — Sunbrella, Airtex, Symacryl, Sunvision, Orchestra, Flag fabric, Raffia and Lace — each selected per model rather than offered as one default across the whole range.
Barlow Tyrie prints none of that colour-programme apparatus at all — every Napoli and Sail parasol in its book is upholstered in the same named cloth, Sunbrella® .302 Canvas, with no colour count printed for it in this catalogue. Where the books draw a solution-dyed-acrylic-versus-polyester line, this page draws it too and no further: Barlow’s own text calls .302 Canvas “100% solution-dyed acrylic yarn”, Symo’s Sunbrella carries the same description against its own “100% polyester” Airtex and Flag fabric, and FIM simply names a family “Solution-dyed Acrylic” to say the same thing.
Ballast & bases
Weight, not adhesive, is what keeps a freestanding parasol down.
Barlow Tyrie spells its own arithmetic out on the page. The Napoli Cantilever’s freestanding base takes twelve concrete slabs, 45 × 45 × 3cm, marked “not supplied” — and the book carries its own sum in print: “12 slabs x 14kg = 168kg + 42kg = Total 210kg.”
Caravita prints a straight table of nineteen named bases, running from lighter plates like Oslo’s 42 kg up to a 450 kg steel plate reserved for Grande — the largest umbrella in the book, printed up to 8 × 8 m square or Ø 10 m round, 79 m² of shade. Heavier canopy, heavier plate, exactly as printed on Grande’s own page and again in the base table itself — not a rule this page derived from the two.
FIM’s own base group is the least uniform of the three: some rows carry a printed weight — a 64 × 64 cm granite base at 75 kg, a 59 × 59 cm concrete base at 60 kg, a round concrete base at 40 kg — and others print none at all, only a requirement for concrete pavers supplied separately (Montecarlo’s own base calls for 50 × 50 cm pavers) or a plain description of galvanised steel ballasted with concrete (the bases built for Flexy Twin, Large and Zen). Where FIM’s book gives a number, it is above; where it does not, this page has not supplied one either.
Care
One of the four books prints a real paragraph on this. The others do not.
Barlow Tyrie’s is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing: “Although Sunbrella® fabric will not mildew or mould, we recommend that the canopy is cleaned regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt on the fabric. A stain repellent has been applied to the .302 canvas-colour fabric to make the cleaning process easier.” Caravita and FIM print fabric performance figures — waterproofing, colour-fastness — but nothing framed as care instructions, so none is invented here to fill the gap.
Symo comes closest to a second voice on the subject, though its version is an accessory and a warranty rather than a paragraph: most of its umbrella range prints a Polyester Ripstop® protective cover as a standard accessory, and eight named models — Cape Wood, Colosso, Gemello, Grandioso, Macsymo, Quattro, Sobrino and Sonata — carry a printed ten-year warranty against colour fading.
Custom
Not everything above is picked as printed — some of it is built to order.
Casualife customises umbrellas to a project's own requirements, not only the standard range. Selected ranges are made to measure — canopies built to a site's own shape and size, poles produced to the wall they mount on — and a canopy can be configured by shape, size, fabric and frame colour, then branded and printed to order. Share a brief with our Custom Studio and we will confirm what's possible.
Made-to-measure canopies
The Freestyle line is built to a site's own shape and size rather than picked from a fixed size table — up to 7 m along one side and 36 m² of shade, provided the shorter side is at least half the longer one.
Poles built to the wall
The Amalfi's wall-mounted pole is produced to order against the wall's own dimensions, including installation height and crank height, rather than supplied as a fixed-length stock part.
Configured and branded canopies
Canopies can be specified through a Model / Shape / Size / Fabric colour / Frame colour / Valance / Accessories configurator, with logo printing available on canopy or valance fabric in up to 4 colours.
Tailor-made advertising parasols
Branded and advertising parasols are tailor-made by a specialist manufacturer with 87 years' experience, working from the first concept through to demanding commercial projects.
Printed to order
Parasol canopies are produced to order and can carry a logo through several printing methods, including screen printing, digital printing and laser cutting.
The houses
Four of the seven shade houses carry a full dossier.
CAPE, Tophole and UNION are indexed name-first — their pieces are in the category index, and their houses sit on the brands roster.
325 pieces across 28 collections, drawn from 325 supplier rows classified “Umbrellas & shade” — the two numbers match because no piece in this category prints both a current row and a historic one, not because rows and pieces are the same thing (dining tables, the other Phase 1 category, has 463 rows but 444 pieces for exactly that reason). They print as 175 rows above rather than 325: Varaschin’s Copacabana folds two umbrellas (300 × 400 and 350 × 350) into one entry because they share a data/variant-groups.json family, the same convention every other range on this site folds by.
Mechanism is read off each piece’s own typology and name — Varaschin’s typology carries the Italian mechanism term directly (“braccio laterale / side arm”), Kingsley Bate’s rows are typed “market umbrella” with no separate mechanism word, which is why that group keeps the maker’s own bare term rather than an asserted one.
