I love to define my design as a sort of molecular process. For the Emma collection, I created the project molecules: weaving design and manufacturing, refined details, careful definition of proportions, a bit of heritage for a lasting project/collection. Moving into Emma's DNA, I created new objects for relaxation, a refined dormeuse and a cozy daybed. The Emma collection, true to its DNA, grows more and more protagonist every year of Varaschin Outdoor Therapy.

Cushion thickness follows the frame: each frame’s seat is built low or high for the cushion it is designed to carry. A dining pad is therefore thin and deep seating thick, and neither is an upgrade on the other.
- For a sunloungers or daybed
- 8–12 cm, hinged — the pad follows the adjustable back, and a fast-draining open-cell core is the usual choice, because a sunlounger spends more time in the weather than most pieces.
- Core
- Cushions for exposed pieces have an open-cell, fast-draining (reticulated) foam core, so water runs straight through rather than pooling in the foam. A crowned top sheds standing water. Neither makes a cushion waterproof: outdoor cushions are built to drain.
- Fabric
- In outdoor fabric, what matters is the fibre. Solution-dyed yarn carries its colour all the way through, so it holds up to sun and scrubbing; surface-dyed cloth loses its colour as it wears. Performance fabrics resist water but are not waterproof. Mildew grows on dirt left on the cloth rather than in the fibre. The usual care advice is to wash and dry the cloth, and to stand a soaked cushion on its edge to drain.
- Patterns & your own fabric
- Plains, stripes and prints can all be specified. The brief records the repeat, the direction and any railroading, so the pattern lines up on every panel. Many pieces also accept customer’s own material (C.O.M.); the brief asks whether you will supply your own.
As the maker dimensions it
Commission custom cushionsVaraschin gives the cushion thickness for a few pieces: 14 cm on the TIBIDABO sofa, over a 28 cm seat base, and 15 cm on the BABYLON sofa. The CRICKET settee has 9 cm on a sculpted shell, and the TIBIDABO dining armchair 8 cm. Most product sheets give the seat height only.

- Timber sourcing claim printed on the SYSTEM opener (render p144, for the optional teak bench seat), the BARCODE opener (p155, whole collection) and the BALI opener (p163, whole collection). Printed wording: "teak di piantagione certificata" / "plantation certified solid teak" / "solid teak wood from certified plantation". No certification scheme or certificate number is printed.
- soluzioni d'arredo / MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS (BELT)
- BELT carries two configuration-reference spreads, render p089 (printed 174-175) and render p093 (printed 182-183). Each prints eight plan-view sofa layouts labelled /01 to /08. NO article codes and NO dimensions are printed on either spread — they are layout inspiration only, not a parts list.
- MODELLO REGISTRATO / REGISTERED MODEL
- Registration statement printed on the technical spreads of BALI BERGÈRE DECK RELAX, NOSS, CLEVER, LINK, BENTO, PLINTO, BAHIA, MAAT and KOLONAKI. SMART instead prints 'MATERIALE REGISTRATO / REGISTERED MATERIAL' (referring to VAR#TEX, not the model).
- LINK extendable mechanism
- Dedicated spread 'link allungabile / EXTENDABLE TABLE' (printed 404-405) showing the 200x100 H73 in three states: closed 200, one 55 cm leaf to 255, two 55 cm leaves to 310. The photo captions are printed '200 mm / 255 mm / 310 mm' — evidently centimetres given the icons and the rest of the catalogue; recorded as printed, not corrected.
- BENTO composition rules
- 'soluzioni d'arredo / MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS' (printed 470-471): nine worked composition diagrams labelled /01 to /09 built from the seven BENTO modules. The prose states the customer may re-arrange purchased modules repeatedly and add further modules later, 'rispettando semplicemente le regole di composizione / following the possible options available'. Caption: 'DIVANO BENTO - TAVOLINO BELT - PANCA SYSTEM'.

- Custom-made covers cut to the ordered sofa composition and produced at the same time as the sofa. 100% polyester, 180 g/m2, light grey, one side coated with acrylic resin, Teflon stain-repellent and oil/water-repellent treatment. Tested to UNI EN 20811 (water permeability): water column greater than 1000 mm.
