Parasols and design shade under the Symo and Sywawa labels.

The house

Two labels, one house

Parasols and design shade under the Symo and Sywawa labels. The house prints its own work as “HANDMADE IN BELGIUM”. Most of the parasol range is catalogued under the Symo name; Sywawa is the design-shade label, carrying pieces such as the freestanding Brandy ash tray alongside the parasols themselves.

The design credits recur rather than scatter. Davy Grosemans is named for Bloom, Breezer, Frou Frou and Gulliver; Lieven Musschoot and Mathias Hennebel together for Paddo, Chiuso, Chiuso Pizzo and the Brandy ash tray; the same two names, credited jointly with the house’s own Sywawa creative studio, for the three Cache-Cache models. Marcel Wanders is named for Geisha, Dirk Wynants for Solis, Chris Kabel — in partnership with Droog design — for Shadylace, and Mark Gabbertas for Tahiti.

“As craftsmen we only produce on demand for our customers.”

Education

Fabric, wind and the ten-year line

Eight named fabrics

The canopy programme runs on a set of named, branded fabrics rather than a generic “acrylic or polyester” choice. Sunbrella (100% solution-dyed acrylic) and Orchestra (100% Sunacryl acrylic fibre, developed by Dickson and used on most current parasols) each carry a ten-year warranty against colour fading on the fabric itself; Symacryl blocks 97% of UV rays; Sunvision is a polyester/PVC blend with a five-year warranty. Airtex, Flag fabric, Raffia and Lace complete the range, Raffia used for the open-weave edges of Tahiti, Classico, Sobrino, Colosso, Gemello, Grandioso, Quattro and Macsymo, and Lace for the Cache-Cache and Shadylace double-canopy designs.

Wind ratings, honestly

Symo prints a Beaufort-scale wind rating — the scale mariners and meteorologists use to describe wind force — as a standard spec field on seventeen of its umbrella models. The rating is tied to the specific base sold under the umbrella, not the canopy alone: Geisha’s own fiche rates it 4 Bft (28 km/h) on the Geisha base, and 6 Bft (49 km/h) on the heavier Rondo base. Where a model’s fiche prints no wind figure, none is stated here.

Ten-year warranty against colour fading

Eight models print a ten-year warranty against colour fading on their own technical fiches — Cape Wood, Colosso, Gemello, Grandioso, Macsymo, Quattro, Sobrino and Sonata — all canopied in Orchestra fabric. A Polyester Ripstop protective cover ships as a standard accessory across most of the range.

Custom

Custom fabrics & canopies

Frame and base colour are printed as “any RAL colour” against most models, on request. Canopy weight runs from roughly 90 to 600 g/m² depending on purpose and budget, and UV-fade resistance is stated as the customer’s own choice, from one year to ten. For branding, Symo prints eight distinct methods of putting a logo on a parasol — pigment screen printing, dispersion, sublimation, digital printing, laser cutting, plastic film, transfer printing and in-mould labelling.
